Workwear Ready for Takeoff

When every meeting counts, every minute is valuable and every customer contact shapes the experience, workwear must function properly. For Swedavia, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of travellers through Swedish airports every day, the uniform is more than just a piece of clothing. It is an important part of the service, safety and overall impression.

In conversation with Swedavia's Educational Coordinator, it becomes clear how important uniforms are for both the everyday lives of employees and Swedavia's brand experience. Ted Bernhardtz and Swedavia have been collaborating since 2013, and over the years have updated the collection to meet the needs of function, identity and sustainability.

Three professional groups
– one united expression

The uniforms are currently worn by staff at information desks, terminal hosts at major airports and drivers who operate buses between terminals at Arlanda Airport. Despite different working environments, the uniform needed to unite the roles while supporting each group in their specific everyday work. At the information desks, the goal is to create a discreet and well-dressed impression. – It should signal security and professionalism. Out in the terminals, the needs are different. There, employees need to be clearly visible, which is achieved through vests and garments that make them easy for travellers to spot, says Swedavia.

Visibility, function and warmth without compromise

Swedavia employees work in shifts, in varying temperatures and in environments where service meets logistics. This placed demands on everything from visibility and discretion to freedom of movement, durability and warmth during outdoor activities.
The uniforms also had to follow Swedavia's visual identity in navy blue and white, be based on collection garments and meet high sustainability requirements. The combination of these factors made the assignment complex, but at the same time clear: to create a whole that works everywhere.

Knitted garments in merino wool

Ahead of the new collection, a new need was identified: a warm, comfortable and durable mid-layer that would work for several professional groups. The solution was a completely new collection of knitted garments in merino wool, developed by us at Ted Bernhardtz and adapted to Swedavia's working environments and image. The garments build on the existing uniform line and can be used in a variety of situations, from sedentary work to physically demanding shifts in the terminals.

A partnership of development

After more than ten years of collaboration, both the business and its needs have changed. During this time, we have consistently helped Swedavia develop additions and new solutions that were not included in the original uniform. These range from new features to additional garments requested by employees.

– We have always been able to quickly and efficiently meet the needs that have arisen over the years that were not included in the regular uniform, says Swedavia, which also highlights the close dialogue and clear communication as important parts of the collaboration.

An inclusive and professional look

The uniforms have become a tool for strengthening both Swedavia's brand and the everyday lives of its employees. They create a uniform appearance when meeting travellers, while allowing each work group to work efficiently and feel comfortable in their role. – We have had a long collaboration and together we try to meet the requests we receive from our employees,’ summarises Swedavia, emphasising that the goal is always for employees to feel proud of what they wear.
